5 Musical Acts (December 2013)

First off, let me apologize to you guys that were scouring my blog last month looking for a “5 Musical Acts” post. November was quite the busy month for me and I was hardly in front of my computer. I hope everyone had a bountiful Thanksgiving holiday and are looking forward to Christmas as much as I am. Now, without further ado:

1) Cardiknox

Cardiknox

Thomas Dutton and Lonnie Angle make up this electro-pop twosome. These New York City based work horses have been making quite a name for themselves and with their upbeat, synth-heavy melodies accompanied by sharp, aggressive vocals so it’s not hard to see why. Their song “Technicolor Dreaming” has reached the top 10 on Hype Machine and there’s no doubt they’ve been featured on countless blogs and magazines by now.

Cardiknox is set to play Brooklyn Bowl as part of their “School Night!” series along with Step Rockets and Strange Talk December 8th.

2) Catamaran

A Catamaran is a multihulled vessel consisting of two parallel hulls of equal size. Around January 2012 a Dallas based four piece decided that would be the perfect name for their band. Combining danceable synth melodies and guitar riffs with haunting/reverby vocals seem to describe this band’s brand of indie rock pretty accurately.

Catamaran 2

Catamaran released their first single on Bandcamp this past Spring and are currently working their first EP which should be around sooner than later. The band seems like quite the interactive bunch sporting every social media platform you can think of! Hit them up and tell them how much you love their stuff.

3) Dolphins and Money

Dolphins and Money

Dolphins and Money is the rap duo of Kreepy K and Sugar Bear. The Orlando, Florida natives deliver gritty, drug ridden rhymes over bass heavy beats. “Ex’s and Ex’s” and “Molly” have been on heavy rotation around these parts since mid-summer. Be sure to check out all of their tunes.

4) Death in the Afternoon

Death in the Afternoon

No, not the famous Ernest Hemingway book, I’m talking about the electronic four piece from Sweden. These guys are so electric that every single member plays the synthesizer.  They’re latest musical outing Kino is a little over a year old and still sounds as fresh as it did when it was originally released. DITA is another band that’s really in touch with their fans via social media. Feel free to give them a shout.

5) Femmepop

FemmepopFemmepop is the work of London’s Margaret O’ Sullivan. Releasing her first EP back in 2008, she’s been on the rise ever since. Her blend of alternative rock and synth pop has garnered her attention for top radio stations in Ireland as well as England’s BBC Music 6. Femmepop is currently working on her debut album. Hopefully we get another production collab with Chris Geddes of Belle and Sebastian! Not that she needs it or anything.
